Search Engine Optimization: Included

There are a few key things that will help you move up the ranks in a search engine: Site Optimization, Link Building, and a little Research.

Step 1: Site Optimization

A site coded to W3C standards is a great starting point for helping a web crawler, such as Google, find the information on your site very easily. All websites designed by Aculios are W3C compliant.

Imagine that you took away all the pretty pictures and styles on the internet... all you are left with is text - that is how a search engine (Google), sees your site. If there is text for it to read, it can run its complex algorithms for cataloguing your information.

Step 2: Keywords and Description

Every site needs a list of keywords that summarize the content on the current page, or on the entire site. It is another aspect that search engines use to file the information they gather. A description is displayed for the returned results. Without a description, a search engine will usually rip the first paragraph, on the first page of your site.

Example Keywords: hockey, Brown hockey, goalie, hockey goalie, goaltender, goalie equipment, goaltender equipment, goal pads, catch glove, stick glove, blocker... etc.

Step 3: Google Webmaster Tools

Google has provided webmasters with a brilliant set of tools that allow the administrator of a site to monitor search results, links, and many other aspects of a site. We enter your site into the Google webmaster tools and also provide a generated sitemap. This step can be performed before or after site submission, however, we like to prepare it before hand.

Step 4: Submit Site

We must notify the search engines of the new site. We specify the web address, and any comments pertaining to the site, and then it is added to a long queue of sites to be "crawled". It can take several days once a site is submitted before it shows up in the results.

Step 5: Link Building

Google and many other search engines use links to determine how popular your site is. The more links, quite possibly the more popular your site is.

You might be popular with two people linking to your site, there really is no specific number, however, the more the better. Tell people about your website, try to get as many people to link to as possible.

Step 6: Review Results ~ Research

Your site might start out at the bottom of the list or it could go straight to the top, it depends on a lot of different factors. After a week or two, we can sit down and review the results, see what is working, and what isn't. A little research into competition, sites with better results, and modifying keywords can help significantly.

The name of your site and your content can play a huge factor in your results. If your site doesn't have a very unique name or the content is rather general, then it is easy for it to get lost in the results.
